Cruise Log: July 11, 2008

The R/V Roger Revelle departed Woods Hole, Massachusetts at 1600 hours on July 9, 2008 under a sunny, summer sky. Friends and family congregated at the dock to say good-bye and good luck to the ship’s crew and science team. After passing through Vineyard Sound, the Revelle headed into the open waters of the Atlantic for a long six-day transit to the first research site called “Rainbow” on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (36° 13’ N latitude, 33° 54’ W longitude). For those prone to sea-sickness, the first 24 hours provided no relief as swell generated by Hurricane Bertha greeted the ship. During the second day, the seas slowly subsided and preparations were well underway to unpack supplies and set-up equipment in support of the exciting research plan that will be executed over the next 5 weeks.
