Anna-Louise Reysenbach

Anna-Louise is a Professor of Microbial Ecology at Portland State University and is the chief scientist of this cruise.  Her research on this cruise will focus on the diversity and physiology of microorganisms that colonize the actively forming and venting hydrothermal chimneys. Her lab and collaborators will also focus on heat and acid-loving (thermoacidophilic) microorganisms.  From chimneys collected by Jason, they will extract DNA and RNA, use quantitative PCR to analyze functional gene and phylogenetic diversity, and culture a variety of thermophiles.  Furthermore, they will deploy several devices to explore the colonization of microbes on different substrates in these systems.
